SEU held the Convocation Ceremony for Class of 2021

The ceremony opened with the flash performance of a chorus, “Farewell”. At the beginning of the ceremony, all the graduates were organized by the university to take a group photo with the SEU officers, guests, teachers’ representatives, etc., so as to record the warm moment of graduation with a photo featured by up to 100 mega pixels. At the two sessions of the graduation ceremony, Jin Baosheng, Vice Chairman of SEU Academic Degree Evaluation Committee and Vice President of SEU, and Ding Hui, Member of SEU Academic Degree Evaluation Committee and Vice President of SEU, announced the decisions on awarding the bachelor’s, master’s and doctor’s degrees, respectively.

President Zhang Guangjun delivered a speech, titled “Shouldering the Mission of the Times to lead Innovation”, to undergraduate students and postgraduate students, in which he extended warm congratulations to the graduate students of Class of 2021 who have accomplished their studies and received their degrees, delivered his heartfelt gratitude to the hardworking faculty and staff, and expressed his cordial greetings to the relatives and friends of the graduates who could not attend the ceremony due to the pandemic.

Besides, he recognized that in the past few years of study in SEU, all the students have not only studied diligently and developed in an all-round way, but also have grown up and advanced when forging ahead against all difficulties, thus having completed the journey of building and realizing dreams in SEU. Especially since last year, we have endured the greatest pandemic in human history, during which we have achieved outstanding and remarkable results, written beautiful and unforgettable stories, and met our extraordinary selves. Meanwhile, with the participation, action and witness of our students, SEU has also gained progress and development.

As also pointed out by Zhang Guangjun, this year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and kicks off the 14th Five-Year Plan. General Secretary Xi Jinping has expressed his ardent expectations for the vast number of young people during his visit of Tsinghua University, showing the way forward to the Chinese young people of the new era. Moreover, Zhang Guangjun encouraged all students, as the SEUers of the new era, must bear in mind the earnest suggestions of the General Secretary to strive for high aspirations with down-to-earth efforts, so as to shoulder the new mission and build the dream in the new era at the historical meeting point of the centenary birthday of the CPC.

To this end, he has proposed four expectations for both the undergraduates and the postgraduates.

First of all, to aim high with the original aspiration of “serving the country” kept in mind. In the new era, students are expected to base themselves on the two overall aspects, take the country as the priority, remain committed to the belief and follow the footmarks of SEU pioneers, with the determination to be the Chinese youth worthy of great responsibilities in the new era.

Secondly, to distinguish the great virtue and cultivate the “excellence” state. Specifically speaking, students are expected to carry forward the red genes of SEU and the university’s motto spirit of “striving for perfection”, forge a strong will and a noble personality among difficulties and challenges, and constantly pursue the lofty realm of “striving for perfection”, so as to live a life of achievements with great love and kindness.

Thirdly, to become a great talent and strive to be a “leading” talent. All the students are expected to inherit the SEU spirit to innovate and take the initiative, integrate the personal ideal pursuits in the cause of the Party and the country, and make youth blossom in the places most needed by the Party and the people.

Fourthly, to take on great responsibilities and the mission of “innovation” with courage. Students are expected to adhere to the SEU spirit that “adversity makes a man”, carry forward the concept of “being world-famous for science”, target at the international frontier to reach new heights in science and technology, and focus on developing key core technologies, so as to make historical contributions of SEUers to the country, the Chinese nation, and the people with persistent efforts and hard work.

In the end, Zhang Guangjun made a wish to all the graduates that they will realize the dream with efforts, live up to the good times, and write a new chapter of shouldering the great mission of the times and leading innovation in history!

Dai Zheng, Deputy Director and Engineer-in-chief of Shanghai Spaceflight Precision Machinery Institute, and Zhang Lixin, Founder and Chairman of Wuxi Chipown Micro-electronics limited, have delivered their speech as the representatives of distinguished alumni for the convocation ceremony of undergraduates and postgraduates, respectively. Chen Jun, Dean of School of Transportation, made a speech as the representative of teaching staff. Prof. Chen Jixin from School of Information Science and Engineering spoke during the postgraduate convocation ceremony as a representative of student’s academic supervisors. Finally, Wang Yani, an undergraduate student from School of Economics and Management, and Cao Jun, a Ph.D. candidate from School of Architecture, also delivered their speeches at the ceremony on behalf of the undergraduates and postgraduates, respectively.

The SEU officers attending the undergraduate ceremony of convocation issued certificates to the outstanding graduates, the graduates employed at the grassroots level, and the representatives of graduates for volunteer teaching in West China. Moreover, at the degree conferral session, the members of the 15th Academic Degree Evaluation Committee of Southeast University turned the tassel and issued the degree certificates for the graduates.

The camera on the site freeze-framed the important moment when the graduates were awarded their degrees, the rocker arm captured the exciting moment of the graduates, and the large screen played the warm interaction during the convocation ceremony. The SEU Convocation - Class of 2021 came to an end in the music, including “Wishes from the Chinese Parasol Tree”, the original theme song for the graduation season of SEU.

It is reported that there is a total of 3,379 undergraduates receiving bachelor's degree, 5,293 postgraduates receiving master’s degree and 640 postgraduates receiving doctor’s degree in 2021. Congratulations and best wishes to them!
