The FLTRP Cup English Writing Contest is the first and only national English writing event in China, attracting thousands of undergraduate students in China since its inauguration in 2013. It is co-sponsored by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, the National Foreign Languages Teaching Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education, and the National Advisory Committee on Teaching English Language to Majors in Higher Education under the Ministry of Education.

The 2014 FLTRP Cup English Writing Contest kicked off in May this year, involving college students from over 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions. 95 students stood out in the fierce university preliminaries and provincial competitions, and gathered in Beijing for the final. In order to fully examine the writing skills of college students and improve their critical thinking ability, the organizing committee elaborately planned the competition system. This year, the contestants were required to write two 800-word essays in three hours. The topic for narrative writing is “A Letter on Father’s Day”, while argumentative writing is about whether or not foreign stars should be invited to Spring Festival evening galas.

Miss Yinan Zhang from the English department of School of Foreign Languages participated in the final of the 2014 FLTRP Cup English Writing Contest held in Beijing during December 11 and 13, and was the winner of Special Prize and the second runner-up. Her achievement results from her excellent command of English, good skills of improvisation and the guidance of Professor Yuqi Zheng from School of Foreign Languages during the preparation phase. Miss Zhang will take part in a short-term exchange program, together with other winners of special prize, in HK and Macao on behalf of Southeast University in 2015.
