On May 27, the National Science and Technology Day celebration and Innovation Conference was held in Beijing. 10 groups and around 300 scientific and technological workers won the innovation award. Professor Wang Wei, Professor Liu Songyu, Professor Hong Wei and Professor Cao Jinde of Southeast University won the certification of merit. Southeast University ranked second for the number of awards. SEU alumni Yang Huangming won the first prize in innovation.
The National Innovation Award is one of the major science and technology awards, besides the National Natural Science Award, the National Technology Award and the National Science and Technology Progress Award. It is only second to the National Highest Science and Technology Award. This award is set for the scientific and technological workers and research teams who have made outstanding achievements in scientific research, technology development, major equipment, engineering research and social services. The prize is awarded every three years, praising 10 research teams and no more than 30 scientific and technological workers who enjoy the benefits of model workers at ministerial and provincial level, and no more than 300 workers receive the certification. In the first conference, researchers from universities and colleges accounted for more than 40% of the prize winners. Tsing University ranked the first place. Southeast University was tied for second with China University of Technology, Peking University and Harbin Institute of Technology.
Four professors of Southeast University were praised for their outstanding research achievements in their respective areas.
Professor Wang Wei, director of the Department of Civil Engineering and Transportation has been working on teaching and studying in transportation for more than 20 years. He especially has deep attainments in urban and regional transportation planning theories and methods, sustainable transportation system, intelligent transportation system and urban traffic management theories and methods. Professor Wang has been responsible for several national projects and has won lots of national and provincial and ministerial prizes. He has also published plenty of academic works and papers.
Professor Liu Songyu, director of the Key Laboratory of Urban Underground Engineering and Environmental Safety of Jiangsu Institute of Geotechnical Engineering, conducted a deep research on the key technical problems of geotechnical and underground engineering in the construction of civil traffic infrastructure. His inventions have solved a lot of technological problems in China’s civil traffic engineering construction and have won plenty of national and provincial prizes. His research results have been widely used in highway, high-speed railway, airport, subway and other major projects, and result in significant economic and social benefits.
Professor Hong Wei, dean of the School of Information Science and Engineering, mainly engaged in microwave and millimeter wave and terahertz technology research. He has made great contributions in microwave and millimeter wave substrate integrated waveguide and its devices, radio frequency communication, antenna technology and computational electromagnetism. He has won the National Natural Science Award twice, and the first provincial Science and Technology Progress Award for three times. He has published many papers in famous national and foreign academic journals. He has more than 90 patents and some patents have been transformed to enterprises and applied to products.
Professor Cao Jinde, dean of the School of Mathematics, has long been engaged in the study of complex networks and complex systems, neural dynamics, and optimization and multi-agent systems. In 2016, he was elected as a member of the Academy of Europe for his research results. In 2015, he was elected as IEEE Fellow due to his great contributions in neural network analysis. He has also published a lot of academic works and papers.
