[Southeast University News Network, Feb. 11] At present, Southeast University has a total of over 1,100 registered international students (long-term students), who are accommodated in three campuses at Sipailou, Jiulonghu and Dingjiaqiao respectively as well as many off-campus residences. During the winter vacation this year, nearly 600 international students preferred to stay in China where the epidemic prevention and control is severe and complicated. All teachers of Southeast University College of International Students ended their vocation in advance in response to the school’s instructions and got involved in the epidemic prevention and control quickly for the sake of international students. Responsibilities for epidemic prevention and control were identified to specific persons and multiple measures were adopted to prevent and control the epidemic in a steadfast manner so as to guarantee the safety of all faculties, students and the campus as a whole.
First of all, to publicize the epidemic prevention information quickly. The English version of the epidemic prevention and control information was prepared in time based on the Chinese version and the official information released by China Daily (English Version) was forwarded meanwhile. The bilingual information in both Chinese and English about the epidemic prevention and control released via Public WeChat Account, WeChat groups and group mailings was also publicized on the bulletin board of the international students’ apartments at various campuses; in addition, the epidemic prevention and control information as well as the emergency contacts were posted.
Secondly, to carry out closed-off management and control in time. The school started to conduct closed-off management and control on Feb. 3. The College of International Students responded quickly and formulated a policy for the management of international students. Among them, the international students at Jiulonghu Campus and Dingjiaqiao campus were not allowed to leave the campus without permission, and the international students at Sipailou Campus were not allowed to leave the dormitory without permission. Besides, specific full-time instructors and teachers were arranged to manage the dormitories with the assistance ofsafeguards to guarantee the effect of closed-off management.
Thirdly, to guarantee the dining services during the closed-off period. During the period of closed-off management, how to solve the dining of international students in campus is a key issue that must be properly addressed. In order to solve the dining of some Muslim students in campus, upon continuous search and contact, a Muslim catering company established by the international students who graduated from the School of Medicine was finally identified to provide halal catering services. Then a van was arranged by the General Affairs Office for dinner distribution to three campuses at Sipailou, Jiulonghu and Dingjiaqiao respectively so as to avoid the possibility of exposure to virus during transportation. Such efforts have been widely acclaimed by Muslim students.
Fourthly, to conduct comprehensive and meticulous survey for elimination. Accurate and comprehensive statistical information is the foundation for good epidemic prevention and control. The College of International Students has worked out a detailed schedule of survey covering all international students at school, and a special person was arranged for contacting with various colleges. Then the international students were further contacted via the college concerned and their mentors, etc. to fill in the information. As of Feb. 7, the information of over 1,100 international students within and beyond the schooling period have been all mastered.
Fifthly, to enhance group prevention and control measures. Upon analysis of the international students’ information as collected, measures have been identified and a dynamic monitoring & reporting mechanism has been established regarding the status quo of 368 international students, especially those 98 international students residing off campus. They were suggested to stay put and receive the local administration with necessities for epidemic prevention provided as requested and their daily dynamics were mastered meanwhile.The College of International Students fully respected the living demands and cultural characteristics of the international students, solved problems through coordination and strived to guarantee their demands for normal life. Besides, the College cooperated with the school’s Security Office and the General Affairs Office to strictly implement the closed-off campus management system and prevent the international students from returning to school in advance. For Chengyuan Apartment located independently off Sipailou Campus, efforts were made to facilitate the installation of the face recognition system. Moreover, the emergency response was planned for any possible emergency andthe student’s back to school as scheduled. Those who have to be medically observed have been treated appropriately at the first time with regular concern and assistance provided.
Sixthly, to develop ideological and psychological guidance. The School of International Students has attached great importance to the ideological dynamics of international students to ensure their mental stability during the period. The WeChat group of international students in China has been established to explain the severity and contagiousness of the epidemic, alleviate their mental pressure, report timely in case of physical abnormalities or exposure to persons in high risk, explain the necessity of closed-off campus management for their understanding and recognition, care about their psychological status quo (especially those who are residing in campus and off-campus), and conduct psychological counseling timely, care about their study psychology, especially those who would graduate in the near future with remote academic guidance provided.
Seventhly, to guarantee the material supply through active coordination. The College of International Students purchased 4230 masks at its own expense and coordinated with the school to equip 2 temperature measuring sets, 30 thermometers, ethyl alcohol and disinfectant, etc..
Eighthly, to open the online education resources. In active response to the strategic deployment of “no suspension of learning” as implemented by the Ministry of Education and SEU, the College of International Students cooperated with the library to launch the English version of electronic resources service guideline round the clock so as to provide better services to all teachers and students including international students, overseas scholars and researchers, help teachers and students develop their scientific researches, study and business in a more convenient manner. In addition, the College of International Students also contacted with several departments including the Graduate School, etc. to prepare the new Training Plan Guide for all graduate students. All colleges and mentors were suggested to enhancing their instructions to the international students who would graduate in the near future. In this way, the international students can still continue their study even when the new semester was postponed.
Ninthly, to launch the Training Plan Guide to the international students. On Feb. 7, the College of International Students contacted with the Graduate School, Jinzhi Software Co., Ltd. and the Network Information Center to boost the construction of the course selection system for international students in the spring semester of 2020. In the evening of Feb. 8, a Graduate Students Submission of Training Plan 2020 (English Version) was distributed to all colleges and international students as a contingency during the transition period.
